Tasting Notes
There is varietal purity in this Sauvignon Blanc yet it still expresses a very distinct sense of place. This wine is light straw in color and absolutely brilliant. The nose begins with lively flavors of melon, grapefruit, and gooseberry. The fruit is fresh and balanced with nuanced minerality, crisp acidity, and layered yet rich texture. Serve this wine very well chilled with fish tacos or grape wood smoked salmon with lettuce sauce.
19/20- Review of Washington Wines: Produced from four clones, this shows a straw-gold color and fresh aromas of Anjou pear, gooseberry, grapefruit, Crenshaw melon, pear blossoms, white flowers and white incense. The flavors are bright and crisp, with notes of grape and pear skins and saline minerals. On the back, the wine turns richly textured, yet natural (no malolactic) with poire William liqueur and a pleasing roundness (from neutral oak aging). All in all, this expresses wonderful varietal purity.
Vineyard Notes
Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washington. 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts supporting native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed in house by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified as is the wine.
Production Notes
This is the sixteenth vintage of Walla Walla Valley Sauvignon Blanc produced from our Estate grown fruit. The 2019 vintage was a warm dry vintage with normal yields and somewhat later ripening than 2018 allowing for full physiological ripeness. Four different Sauvignon Blanc clones were hand-harvested, sorted and whole cluster pressed. Settled juice was chilled and cold fermented in stainless steel; this wine did not go through malolactic fermentation. After primary fermentation, the wine was aged in neutral Sirugue French oak for additional complexity and roundness.
