2019 Estate Chardonnay

2019 Estate Chardonnay
Walla Walla Valley

Inspired by the Grand Cru’s of Burgundy, chardonnay was the first wine founder Rick Small made as a home winemaker. Our new 100% Estate Chardonnay was produced as one of Rick’s pet projects. It is entirely from the North Block at the Estate Vineyard, which has a north-facing aspect and is all Wente clone. He wanted to explore making a leaner style Chardonnay, which meant picking this block at lower bix than the others, using no new oak, and only going through minimal malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the natural acidity.

Tasting Notes
Beautifully vibrant flavors of fresh star fruit and ripe Bartlett pear marry perfectly with subtle mineral notes. Whole cluster pressing gives delineated fruit flavors. Finally, the oak is perfectly understated in a wonderful proportion with the alcohol and crisp acidity. The mouthfeel has a nice weight and texture.
Ratings
Editors’ Choice, 91 Points- Wine Enthusiast: This Chardonnay saw no new oak and had minimal malolactic fermentation. The aromas are all about subtlety with its notes of spice, apple, and Bosc pear. The flavors are full of grace and balance, bringing vibrancy and freshness.
Vineyard Notes
100% Woodward Canyon North block. These vines were originally sourced from Celilo Vineyard and planted in 2011. Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washington. There are 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed in house by Woodward Canyon.
Production Notes
2019 was a warm/dry vintage. The north block CH yielded a high yield of 5.8 tons/acre.
