Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This beautiful and dark garnet wine shows a complex nose of black fruits, chili powder, tomato, and lead pencil that integrate beautifully with the subtle, attractive oak. In the mouth, the wine is rich and elegant, showing ripe fruit, nice balance, and proportion. Integrated tannins enhance the texture; the finish is complex, generous, and long. While this wine can be enjoyed now it will benefit greatly from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should develop for ten years or more. Store and serve at cellar temperature.
94 POINTS - Jeb Dunnuck: The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series comes from a mix of vineyards and includes 7% Petit Verdot, all aged in 54% new French oak. (There's a splash of Hungarian oak as well.) Darker currants, mulberries, new leather, lead pencil, and plenty of herbal, floral notes emerge from this medium to full-bodied red, a pure, incredibly polished, balanced effort with loads of character. It already offers pleasure today yet should evolve for another 20 years if stored correctly. 94 POINTS - International Wine Report: Truly a benchmark for Washington State Cabernet, the 28th edition of the Artist Series from Woodward Canyon checks in at 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot and spends 22 months in 54% new French oak and 14% in new Hungarian oak barrels. It offers outstanding notes of freshly picked blackberry, blue plum, spruce forest, graphite, tobacco leaf, and cedary herbs. Mouthwatering acidity, a medium to full body, round sweet tannins, and a lengthy fruit and spice driven finish complete the wine. Enjoy this one over the next 12-15 years. 93 POINTS - Vinous: 2019 is the 28th edition of the Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series. This version blends 93% Cabernet Sauvignon with 7% Petit Verdot. The palate revels in its beautiful balance and green bell pepper notes. A massive core of blackberry and black cherry greets you, followed by savory undertones and a lengthy finish. The oak here gently wraps around the core of dark fruits. Gorgeous now, this has another 15 years to go in the cellar. 93 POINTS - James Suckling: Red cherry, red currant, and black tea on the nose. Full-bodied with silky tannins. Very focused on the palate with clear, articulate acidity. Sleek and concentrated. 93% cabernet sauvignon and 7% petit verdot. Drink or hold. 92 POINTS - Wine Advocate, Anthony Mueller 91 POINTS, Cellar Selection - Wine Enthusiast
Vineyard Notes
Champoux Vineyard (44%) Founded in 1972 and located in Alderdale Washington within the Horse Heaven Hills AVA. Woodward Canyon has been sourcing from Champoux since 1981. In 1996 Woodward Can-yon and fellow Washington State producers Powers/Badger Mountain Winery, Quilceda Creek Winery, and Andrew Will Winery became joint owners. Malaga gravelly fine sandy loam - glacial outwash; warden silt loam - loess over lacustrine deposits; Sagehill fine sandy loam - lacustrine deposits with a mantle of loess. Slope 3%, 650ft elevation. Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (35%) Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. There are 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Can-yon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified. Wallula Vineyard (12%) The vineyard is planted on south-facing slopes which vary from 2% up to 30% grade, and its perimeter totals nine miles of varied terrain. Of this perimeter, the shore of the Columbia River provides nearly three and a half miles of waterfront. From the river’s edge at 320 feet above sea level, the property climbs to its peak elevation of 1,367 feet, over a distance of nearly three and a half miles. Weinbau Vineyard (9%) Weinbau has a view of the Rattlesnake Mountains to the south and the Saddle Mountains to the north. The land slopes gently south, with elevation ranging from 710-950 feet. Weinbau is a warm site with excellent air drainage, and the soil is dominated by Kennewick silt loam with a 2-5% slope. The consistency of soil type shows up in vine growth and subsequently in the wines.
