Tasting Notes
The color is dense and dark. Elegant high toned aromatics of toasty oak and subtle leather from new oak intermingle with notes of graham, savory herbs, and cigar box. The wine has beautifully restrained fruit with our classic Walla Walla structure that provides a nice texture and transitions to a firm and well balanced mouthfeel. There is a distinct “expression” or “sense of place” in this wine. Upon its release; the wine will benefit from more bottle aging and with proper cellaring, this wine should age well for ten years or more.
Ratings
94+ POINTS, Jeb Dunnuck: The 2018 Woodward Canyon Estate Reserve checks in as 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah, and 5% Malbec, all from the estate vineyard in Walla Walla. With good concentration and medium to full-bodied richness, it has a heady bouquet of black cherries, blueberries, cedary oak, and chocolate, with plenty of background oak as well as building tannins. It’s firm and angular at the moment and mostly potential, yet should round into form with 4-5 years of bottle age. 94 POINTS- Dr. Owen Bargreen: The ‘Estate Reserve’ is a big wine that really needs some air to tame. Truly unique, the final blending was 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 12% Petit Verdot, 8% Syrah, and 5% Malbec. After a few hours, the wine shows really good viscosity and freshness with dark currants, dried herbs, and black cherry cordial tones, giving this an air of decadence. The beautiful length adds to the enjoyment. Drink 2022-2038 92 POINTS, James Suckling 91 POINTS, The Wine Advocate 19.5/20 POINTS, Highly Recommended- Rand Sealey's Review of Washington Wines: This vintage of Woodward Canyon’s Estate Reserve is composed of 59% Cabernet Franc, 24% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot. It presents an opaque ruby color and intoxicating aromas of wild blackberries, black cherries, black currants, crushed black roses, cigar box, juniper berry, sandalwood, black olive, mixed herbs and spiced incense. The flavors are deep and penetrating, with layers of dark fruits that are infused with black licorice, extra dark cocoa, French roast and loam and basalt minerals. On the back, the wine turns vigorous yet satiny, with sensations of macerated fruits, roasted pecans, lanolin (“legs”), kidskin, integrated oak (100% new French for 27 months), all leading seamlessly into a lengthy herb and spice dusted fine grained tannin finish.
