Walla Walla Valley
This wine has a beautiful garnet color and a nice mouthfeel. A nose of blackberry cobbler; fruit-forward with a toastiness that adds another layer of complexity. This Barbera shows an impeccable concentration of fruit, balance, and integrated mature tannins. The finish is generous, silky, and long. This wine should easily age for 6 years or more with proper storage. The wine is perfect for pizza or Greek food.
Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washington. 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts supporting native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed in house by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified as is the wine.
Woodward Canyon has been growing and producing Barbera for twenty years, making the vines among the oldest in Washington State. This Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard Barbera was produced from blending two very distinct clones. Yields were more normal coming in at about 2.5 tons/acre. 2017 had been a small crop by comparison. The grapes were fermented in 2-ton stainless steel fermenters and the must was punched down two times per day. After pressing, the wine went to 59-gallon barrels to finish yeast fermentation followed by a slow spontaneous malolactic fermentation.
