Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The wine shows beautifully, with rich high toned fruit, balanced acidity and great proportion. Complex flavors of black fruit, spice, mocha and earth are enticing; the tannins are fine grained and mature. Notes of black cherry, spiced oak, leather and earth come forth in the aroma. This wine is generous and balanced enough to enjoy now, yet with the complexity and structure to age well for six years or more.
Ratings
91 POINTS- Jeb Dunnuck: The 2017 Estate Merlot (100% Merlot) comes all from the Walla Walla Valley and was brought up in 50% new oak. This ripe, medium to full-bodied effort has plenty of classic Merlot jammy blackberry and black cherry fruits as well as notes of chocolate, leafy herbs, and loamy earth. Rich and mouthfilling, with building tannins, it's another 2017 that's going to be best with 2-3 years of bottle age.
Vineyard Notes
Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is currently the western most vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washington. The 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sage brush, arrow leaf balsam root, and perennial wild-flowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified as is the wine.
Production Notes
This 2017 Walla Walla Valley Valley Estate Merlot was produced from grapes grown at Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (Salmon Safe certi-fied) at the western edge of the Walla Walla Valley. This mature south facing “old vine” vineyard block (Clone 3) is now 22 years of age. The newer merlot block (Clone 181) is younger but very impressive. Average yield in 2017 was miniscule at just over a half ton per acre. Harvest was completed the first week of September, 2017.
