Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
This complex yet elegant vintage of “Old Vines” Cabernet Sauvignon shows sophistication and concentration that come from such extraordinary 40+ year-old vines. It expresses the purity of fully mature cabernet sauvignon that can only be achieved from old vine fruit. The color is a deep purple, and intermingling aromas of baking spice, cedar, graphite and ripe blackberries leap from the glass. Flavors of black fruits blend beautifully with pencil, cigar box and exotic spice of new French oak that coat the mouth. The texture is soft but firm with beautifully integrated tannins offering a rich, long finish. This wine will benefit greatly from additional cellaring and, with proper storage, should last for ten years or more.
97 POINTS- Jeb Dunnuck: The flagship here from this reference point estate is the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines, which is based on 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Malbec aged 21 months in new barrels. The fruit comes 80% from the Sagemoor Vineyard, with smaller amounts from Champoux and Woodward Canyon. Deep purple/plum-colored with powerful notes of blackcurrants, dried earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and chocolate, this full-bodied, regal, austere beauty has a stacked mid-palate, a layered, mouthfilling texture, ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. Reminding me of a top Saint-Estephe (or Pauillac?), it needs to be hidden in the back of the cellar, but it will cruise for 30 years or more. Hats off to winemaker Kevin Mott for another gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon that will stand up to the best out there. 95 POINTS-WA Wine Blog: The ‘Old Vines’ Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the Sagemoor Vineyard, as well as the Champoux Vineyard and Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard. The final blending is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller portions Malbec and Petit Verdot. Deeply perfumed aromatics greet you with gorgeous black tea, exotic spice, blackberry cobbler, and shades of anise that all sing in unison in the glass. The palate is plush, showing off a silky mouthfeel. While obviously dense, the feeling of elegance is really enticing. Blackberry compote, Turkish coffee, creosote, and suggestions of chocolate-covered kirsch flavors all collide on the palate. Impressive at only two years of age, this stunning wine will have an exceedingly long life in the cellar. Drink 2020-2040
