2017 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon

2017 40th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon

In honor of our 40th Anniversary, founder Rick Small was inspired to create this one-of-a-kind wine to showcase two different yet equally excellent vineyard sites. This very special wine is a 50/50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from Champoux Vineyard and Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard. The Cabernet Sauvignon was sourced from the oldest Cabernet blocks at both vineyards, with an average vine age of 35+ years. The average yield between these two vineyards was less than one and a half tons per acre, creating a dark dense wine with amazing texture and balance.

Tasting Notes
This Cabernet Sauvignon is dark brick red and dense in the glass. A nose of herbs, tobacco, earth, forest floor, and allspice combines with good acidity and complex fruit in the mouth. A quintessential Washington State Cabernet that opens up beautifully with time in the glass. The new French oak integrates the fruit, acid, and alcohol creating a nice weight, texture, and overall mouthfeel. This wine is cerebral; take your time and get to know it. To know it is to love it!
Ratings
95 POINTS- Dr. Owen Bargreen: In honor of their 40th anniversary, Woodward Canyon founder Rick Small has chosen to make a limited production bottling that is equal parts Champoux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon and Woodward Canyon Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is gorgeous on the mouth with its silky texture and wonderful sense of verve and viscosity. Ripe dark currants collide with minerals, smoke, sagebrush, and blackberry compote on the palate. Full-bodied and delightful even at the four-year mark, this beautiful wine will cellar well for another fifteen to twenty years. Drink 2021-2038. 94 POINTS- Jeb Dunnuck: The deep ruby/purple-hued 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon 40Th Anniversary offers lots of mulled red and black fruits as well as spicy oak, chocolate, and graphite. It has plenty of oomph, is medium to full-bodied, has velvety tannins, and a focused, fresh style that will benefit from bottle age. Give it 2-4 years and enjoy over the following 15-20. This cuvée is all Cabernet Sauvignon, from the Champoux and Woodward Estate vineyards, that spent 31 months in new barrels.
Vineyard Notes
Champoux Vineyard (50%)- Block 1 Cabernet Sauvignon (planted 1972): Founded in 1972 and located in Alderdale Washington within the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, Champoux’s original plantings of the famed "Block One" Cabernet Sauvignon are regarded as being among the oldest and finest in Washington State and are a key component of our “Old Vines”. In 1996 Woodward Canyon and fellow Washington State producers Powers/Badger Mountain Winery, Quilceda Creek Winery, and Andrew Will Winery became joint owners. Malaga gravelly fine sandy loam over lacustrine deposits, glacial outwash. Slope 3%, 650ft elevation. Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (50%)- Old Block, clone 8 Cabernet Sauvignon (planted 1991): Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washington. There are 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified.
