2014 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
In 2014, we saw beautiful ripening with lovely physiological maturity due to a warmer than “normal” vintage. Cultural practices such as leaf stripping, shoot thinning and green harvesting worked to perfection. Clone 4 and Clone 6 cabernet sauvignon, two clones of petit verdot and three clones of syrah were thinned to one or two clusters per shoot to insure evenly ripened fruit. The average yield was approaching 3 tons per acre. Our efforts toward sustainable wine growing begun in 2004 are clearly improving the grapes and wine from Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard.

This wine has enticing aromas of Asian spice, black olive, tobacco and sweet oak that integrate beautifully with generous black fruit. An elegant but firm mouth feel begins with black current/cassis leading towards notes of toffee and mocha that is exotic, generous and long. The wine shows great proportion and is quite stylish for a wine so young. This is clearly a wine made from a warm vintage. While one could enjoy this wine now it will benefit greatly from additional cellaring and should continue to develop for eight to ten years with proper storage.

All grapes were harvested by hand and sorted prior to crushing. This red wine was fermented in very small 2000 liter stainless steel tanks and was gently punched down two times per day. After pressing and settling, this wine went directly to French chateau barrels for additional aging and maturation.
