2014 Nelms Road Cabernet Sauvignon
In 1998, Woodward Canyon Winery began producing wines under its second label, Nelms Road. Nelms Road offers merlot and cabernet sauvignon from Walla Walla Valley and Washington State grapes. It was developed to produce delicious and affordable red wine from young vineyards and surplus lots of Woodward Canyon production. While these wines may be cellared for several years, they are truly ready for enjoyment now.
This new bottling of Nelms Road Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the larger and more productive 2014 vintage well. The younger vines from select vineyards continue to produce better grapes allowing us to produce better wine every year. Add to that some truly phenomenal press wine from some of the oldest and most celebrated vineyards in Washington State, and we can produce an exceptional cabernet sauvignon at a very attractive price.
The rather warm growing conditions of 2014 gave enticing aromas of ripe black fruits, exotic spices, tobacco, and black olive. The wine is deep red in color. In the mouth the wine offers firm blackberry fruit, ripe mature tannins and a long generous finish. The wine is in beautiful proportion.
While this wine was produced for early consumption, it will improve with additional time in bottle. With proper storage this wine should easily age five years or longer. This red wine would be fantastic with wood-fired pizza, roasted meats and aged cheese.
The biggest changes in 2014 for Nelms Road Cabernet from Woodward Canyon were the sassy copper foil, kraft paper label of map-like roads and a screw cap finish. What didn’t change was the quality of the wine inside the bottle. Delicious flavors of blackberry, mineral and cherry candy are preceded by enticing aromas of cherry, vanilla, olive and herbs – a great value for your holiday red-wine needs.
