Vintage Specific Characteristics:
Reflecting the much more moderate and warmer 2012 growing season, this new Dolcetto is beautifully proportioned with ample fruit and is a bit more structured. The tannins are firm and integrated due to perfect physiological ripeness. Due to the fabulous 2012 vintage, the yield was larger at 2.9 tons per acre. This wine reminds me of the lovely dolcetto wines produced in the Dogliani region of northern Italy. I love those wines!
Production Notes and General Characteristics:
Dolcetto is always the first red wine of the vintage to be released at Woodward Canyon. This wine was fermented in one stainless steel tank and was pumped over twice a day. After pressing, the wine was transferred to older French oak barrels to complete primary fermentation. Malo-lactic fermentation was not allowed to occur in our very cold cellar. After nearly six months of aging, the wine was racked from barrel and bottled in the summer of 2013.
This wine has a beautiful dark garnet color and fruit driven nose of mature Walla Walla River blackberries. Flavors of black fruits and subtle spices carry through in the mouth. The finish is long, generous and well balanced. This wine is produced with summer lunches in mind and should be enjoyed at cool cellar temperature.
Fermented in stainless steel, this Dolcetto shows wonderful fruit. It displays a deep purplish color and aromas of blueberry, cherry and plum that jump out of the glass, with scents of black roses and anise. The young red fruit flavors are ripe and vibrant, intermixed with cocoa, mocha and earthy minerals. On the back, the fruits turn sweetish (“dolce”), yet dry, with notes of dried cherries and roasted nuts, followed by a squeeze of tart blueberry juice and a dusting of baking spices on the generous smooth tannin finish.
