Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard. All grapes are sustainably grown at our Walla Walla Valley Estate Vineyard. Additionally, the vineyard and this wine are designated Salmon Safe.
This is the thirteenth vintage of Sauvignon Blanc produced from our Estate grown fruit. The 2016 vintage was later ripening yet was similar to recent vintages such as 2014 allowing for full physiological ripeness at around 22.0 brix. The yield was up substantially in 2016 to about 3.4 tons per acre.
The harvest of four distinct clones took place on August 31st and September 1st. Hand harvested grapes were sorted and whole cluster pressed. Settled juice was chilled and cold fermented in stainless steel; this wine did not go through malo-lactic fermentation. After primary fermentation the wine was aged in neutral French oak for complexity and roundness. There is varietal purity in this Sauvignon Blanc yet still it expresses a very distinct sense of place.
This wine has a beautiful light straw color and is brilliantly clear. The nose is showing a touch of ripe melon, perhaps even a subtle muscat note. There are lively flavors of peach, melon and anise; the fruit is balanced with lovely acidity and the texture is layered and rich. The finish is generous and long. Serve this wine very well chilled with Dungeness crab cakes.
