Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard. All grapes are sustainably grown at our Walla Walla Valley Estate Vineyard. Additionally, the vineyard and this wine are designated Salmon Safe.
This is the fourteenth vintage of Walla Walla Valley Sauvignon Blanc produced from our Estate grown fruit. The 2017 vintage was somewhat later ripening allowing for full physiological ripeness at around 22.7 brix. The yield was larger than past several vintages at about 3.7 tons per acre.
The harvest of four different sauvignon blanc clones took place on September 2nd. Hand harvested grapes were sorted and whole cluster pressed. Settled juice was chilled and cold fermented in stainless steel; this wine did not go through malo-lactic fermentation. After primary fermentation the wine was aged in neutral French oak for additional complexity and roundness. There is varietal purity in this Sauvignon Blanc yet still it expresses a very distinct sense of place.
This wine has a beautiful light straw color and is brilliantly clear. The nose is showing a touch of ripe melon, perhaps even a subtle muscat note. There are lively flavors of white peach, melon and spice; the fruit is balanced with lovely acidity and the texture is layered and rich. The finish is generous and long. Serve this wine very well chilled with Dungeness crab cakes.
