Ratings
International Wine Report: 96 Points, Sourced from venerable vines averaging four decades in age, this wine showcases an extraordinary depth of character. It pours an inky purple, exuding aromas of crushed graphite, wild blueberry, and warm autumnal spices. The palate reveals an opulent interplay of black cherry, dark cocoa, and a savory undertone reminiscent of dried tomato leaf. Subtle nuances of new French oak weave seamlessly with the fruit, creating a balance that is both refined and powerful. The tannins are polished yet assertive, providing structure while contributing to an enduring, velvety finish. This one needs a few years to come together before enjoying. Highly recommended. Vinous: 95 Points,The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines opens with a mentholated air, mixing crushed chalk and stone dust with dried roses, lavender pastille, white pepper and plums. This is velvety smooth and elegant in feel, with masses of ripe red and blue fruits that envelop the palate, complemented by notes of sweet spice and dark chocolate. The 2022 slowly melts away from the senses, glycerol in feel, leaving sweet tannins and a balsamic tinge that fades slowly. Wow. 95 POINTS - Owen Bargreen: The 2022 ‘Old Vines’ is another fabulous edition of this wine and comes from vines that average for years old. Asian spices and black tea mark the nose alongside wild huckleberry and shades of red bell pepper giving this a light herbal edge. The palate is full-bodied and filled with nerve and weight. Give this beauty another year to settle. Drink 2025-2040 Decanter: 94 Points, A smoked cedar plank, evergreen bough and a touch of saline minerality frame a melange of black fruit aromas. This OIld Vine shows a Washington State designation with fruit from Weinbaur and Sagemoor vineyards and the Woodward Canyon Estate vines. The palate is intensely ripe, with black plums, spicy Mexican chocolate and finishing with white pepper lift. Wine Advocate: 93+ Points, The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Vines comes from vines more than 40 years old. It has pure, layered aromas of cassis, black cherries, cast iron, grilled peppers and violet. The full-bodied palate is elegantly styled with Goldilocks ripeness and complex savory, herbal and floral tones. It’s structured by soft, velvety tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long, mineral-driven finish. James Suckling: 92 Points, This offers rich, dark-fruited character with toasty and chocolatey nuances. Polished and refined on the full-bodied palate with firm, focused tannins. Bitter spice on the lingering finish. Drink or hold.
Vineyard Notes
Sagemoor Vineyard (86%): Founded in 1968, Sagemoor Vineyards was a pioneering effort that helped establish the Washington State wine industry. Its early vineyards are among the oldest plantings of vinifera grapes in the state. Rick began using Sagemoor fruit in his home winemaking days, and we continue to use it today. A significant number of 1972 plantings are still producing our Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from specific rows in Blocks 3 and 9. Quincy loamy fine sand, Sagehill very fine sandy loam, 2-10% slope. 572ft elevation. Weinbau Vineyard (7%): Weinbau has a view of the Rattlesnake Mountains to the south, and the Saddle Mountains to the north. The land slopes gently south, with elevation ranging from 710-950 feet. Weinbau is a warm site with excellent air drainage, and the soil is dominated by Kennewick silt loam with a 2-5% slope. The consistency of soil type shows up in vine growth and subsequently in the wines. Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (7%): Planted in 1977, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla, Washington. There are 35 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750 -850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified.
