Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The wine shows beautifully, with nice rich fruit, balanced acidity, and fine-grained tannins. The full-bodied mouthfeel leads to complex flavors of black olive, and spice. Enticing notes of black cherry, spiced oak, and leather come forth.
Cellar Selection, 92 POINTS- Wine Enthusiast: This wine is still settling into its skin. The aromas initially bring notes of freshly mortared green herbs, cherry, and raspberry. Silky flavors follow with plenty of tannic heft. The stuffing is all there, but it needs time to come into its own. But when it does? Ooh. Best after 2023. 92 POINTS, Owen Bargreen: Sourced from both an older (23 year old) and newer block, the Merlot shows black cherry and black currants that mingle with Asian spices and pipe tobacco on the nose. The palate is soft, round and generous with a silky mouthfeel. Layers of kirsch cordial and allspice connect with chocolate and black plum on the palate. Downright delicious even at this juncture, this beautiful wine has at least another decade of aging to go. Drink 2020-2032 91 POINTS, Jeb Dunnuck: Lots of bright cherry and mulberry fruits emerge from the 2018 Merlot Woodward Canyon Estate, which offers more tobacco, earth, new leather, and spice with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, lightly textured, and beautifully balanced, with quality tannins, it’s an outstanding Merlot to drink over the coming decade. The wine is 100% Merlot and spent 20 months in 50% new French oak.
Vineyard Notes
Established in 1976, Woodward Canyon is the westernmost vineyard in Walla Walla Valley AVA, roughly 15 miles west of Walla Walla Washing-ton. There are 41 vineyard acres planted and several more acres of green belts that support native species such as western juniper, ponderosa pine, western sagebrush, arrowleaf, balsamroot, and perennial wildflowers. Ritzville silt loam over fractured basalt, slope 15-18%, 750-850ft elevation. Managed by Woodward Canyon. All grapes are Salmon Safe certified as is the wine.
Production Notes
This 2018 Walla Walla Valley Estate Merlot was produced from grapes grown at Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (Salmon Safe certified) at the western edge of the Walla Walla Valley. This mature south-facing “old vine” vineyard block (Clone 3) is now 23 years of age. The newer merlot block (Clone 181) is younger but very impressive. The average yield in 2018 ranged from 2.3 tons to 3 tons per acre.
