Tasting Notes
The wine shows beautifully, with rich high toned fruit, balanced acidity and great proportion. Complex flavors of cherry, spice, coffee and earth are enticing. Notes of black cherry, spiced oak, leather and earth come forth in the aroma. This wine is generous and balanced enough to enjoy now, yet with the complexity and structure to age well for six years or more.
Ratings
93 POINTS- Jub Dunnuck The 2015 Merlot Woodward Canyon (there's 19%Cabernet Sauvignon and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) is terrific and shines on all accounts. Loads of spiced red fruits along with hints of cassis, cedar, and cigar tobacco all flow to a medium bodied Merlot that has fine tannins, a rocking texture, and a great finish. It's well worth buying and cellaring. WA Wine Blog- 91 POINTS, Founded in 1981, Woodward Canyon has produced a Merlot wine for more than 20 years. Showing really good dark and red fruits on the nose, the toasty oak nicely wraps around this wine. Black cherry, blackberry pie and mocha flavors all nicely combine on the palate, showing good richness and minerality. Drink 2018-2028
Vineyard Notes
This 2015 Columbia Valley Merlot was produced from grapes grown at Woodward Canyon Estate Vineyard (LIVE certified sustainable and Salmon Safe) at the western edge of the Walla Walla Valley and at Sagemoor Vineyard located above the Columbia River near the Tri-Cities. These mature south facing vineyards are now 20 years average age, are comprised predominantly of silt loam and sandy loam soils respectively, and are very well drained.
Production Notes
This Merlot was pumped over and/or punched down by hand two times per day in small stainless steel tanks. After pressing, settling, and racking the various lots were moved to French barrels for aging and maturation. After crush, this wine was assembled and in February 2018 was bottled and laid down in our cellars for additional development.
