Suddenly, everyone is practicing sustainability and is going green. We think that is wonderful. True to form, we here at Woody have been utilizing those practices before they became fashionable. We prefer to focus on sustainability, even though we may pursue organic farming and green practices, because sustainability looks at the overall operation – the environmental, social and economic systems. In sustainable terms, this means we are dealing with a triple bottom line: economics (making a profit), environmental (minimal and safe chemical use) and social (being a good neighbor and employer).
Fundamentally, we’re harvesting an agricultural product, and with that comes a certain responsibility to the land from which the fruit comes and to the community in which it is grown. It means we are actively interested in the well-being of our employees and of our community (both locally and the larger wine community); all employees receive a living wage, and we participate year-round in discussions of how to better manage our natural resources. Rick and Darcey volunteer and serve on many local and regional boards, as do many of our employees. For the second year, Woodward Canyon is sponsoring the Leader's Jersey in the Tour of Walla Walla bicycle race.
